Rotary Hammers: Built to Drill Concrete That Stops Everything Else
A Rotary Hammer Is Not a Bigger Hammer Drill
A rotary hammer is not a bigger hammer drill. A hammer drill rattles the chuck; a rotary hammer slams the bit forward thousands of times a minute. That hammer-plus-rotation turns concrete drilling into a routine job.
We have built power tools in Taizhou, China since 2020, and rotary hammers are the category we know best. The range runs from a compact 500W 20mm model to a 850W 28mm unit, plus a 21V cordless family - all made and exported by us.
How a Rotary Hammer Works
Inside, a piston-driven mechanism delivers 2,000 to 4,800 impact rate per minute straight down the axis of the bit while the chuck rotates it, so each blow lands on fresh material. Force is measured in joules of impact energy, not just watts.
- Hammer drill: a cam adds light vibration - fine for brick, slow on concrete.
- Rotary hammer: a piston strikes the bit directly - the tool for concrete, anchors and chiselling.
- Impact driver: rotational impacts for screws, not drilling. Different job.
What Is SDS-Plus? The Shank System
SDS-Plus (SDS+ for short) is the drill bit shank used by professional rotary hammers. Instead of a chuck that grips the bit, the bit slides into a spring-loaded chuck where two slots lock it in place, letting the piston strike the rear of the bit directly.
Why it matters: bits lock in without a key, move with the piston so the blow reaches the work, and almost never slip. The shank is universal - any SDS-Plus bit fits. For holes above 30mm, SDS-Max is the larger standard; for most construction work, SDS-Plus is the sweet spot, and the whole ETpower range uses it.
Rotary Hammer Buying Guide: Six Specs
Start with the hole size you drill most often:
- Drill diameter (mm). 20mm for light holes; 24-26mm for M8-M12 anchors; 28mm for heavier work.
- Impact energy (J). 1.7-2.4J for light concrete, 3.0-3.2J for dense or reinforced; doubling it roughly halves drilling time.
- Power (W). 500W entry, 800-900W professional.
- Modes (drill / hammer drill / chisel). A 3-mode selector turns one tool into an anchor drill, a concrete drill and a chisel.
- Safety clutch. Stops the kick if the bit binds on rebar; do not skip it on 26mm+ machines.
- Weight and grip. Overhead work punishes heavy tools; the 26mm cordless line is built for that trade-off.
Corded or Cordless? The Trade-Off, Straight
Neither wins outright. Corded means endless power and the lowest cost per hole; the 850W ETRH2-28 is the strongest in the range. Cordless means no generator, lead or outlet: the 21V ETBRH01-26 delivers the same 3.0J as its corded sibling.
Where a Rotary Hammer Earns Its Keep
- Formwork and steel fixing - drilling through panels and cast-in channels. ETRH2-26.
- Electrical and plumbing rough-in - chasing walls for conduits; the 3-mode ETRH3-26 handles plaster too.
- Tile and plaster removal - chisel mode clears a wall in minutes; the ETRH2-28 carries the most impact.

Rotary Hammer FAQ
What is the difference between a rotary hammer and a hammer drill?
A hammer drill rattles the chuck with a cam; a rotary hammer strikes the bit directly for far more impact. For concrete and anchors, choose a rotary hammer.
What size hole can a 26mm rotary hammer drill?
Up to 26mm with solid SDS-Plus bits, more with core bits; a 26mm machine covers M8-M12 anchors comfortably.
Do I need special bits, and will any SDS-Plus bit fit?
Yes. SDS-Plus is a universal standard, so bits from any brand fit our chucks. Never use a round-shank bit in an SDS-Plus chuck.
Can a rotary hammer chisel?
Only if it has a chisel mode. Our 3-mode models (ETRH3-26, ETRH2-28) switch to chiselling for tile and mortar removal.
Will it drill through rebar?
SDS-Plus bits pass light rebar, but a heavy hit can bind; the safety clutch on 26mm+ models stops the kick. Ease off and relocate.
How long does a cordless model last on one battery?
With a 4.0Ah 21V pack, about 40-60 minutes of intermittent drilling; keep a second pack charging for a full shift.
